Overview: What is Insulin-dependent Diabetes Mellitus? What is Type 1 diabetes?  Insulin dependent diabetes mellitus, known as Type 1 diabetes is a type of diabetes resulting from the inability of the pancreas to produce insulin. Diabetes is a chronic health problem that is characterised by elevated blood glucose levels.   Type-1 diabetes is seen in children and so it was also known as juvenile diabetes. Although it can occur in all ages and adults too, the children are more commonly seen affected with it.
